Figma Not Showing Images? 8 Ways to Fix It
If Figma is not showing images correctly, the problem can range from a temporary loading issue to the way an image was imported, cropped, masked, or placed inside a frame.
You might see an empty frame, a missing image, an image that refuses to load, or a design that looked fine previously but suddenly appears incomplete. Before replacing everything manually, there are several things worth checking.
Why Is Figma Not Showing Images?
There isn't one single reason images can disappear or fail to display in Figma. The problem may be related to the file itself, your connection, Figma's application or browser session, or how the image layer is configured inside the design.
The easiest approach is to start with the simple causes before changing anything in the design.
How to Fix Images Not Showing in Figma
Start with the simplest fixes before changing or replacing your images. In many cases, the image itself is still there and the problem is caused by loading, visibility, fills, or clipping.
- Check your internet connection
- Reload the Figma file
- Check whether the image layer is hidden
- Inspect the image fill
- Check masks, frames, and clipping
- Try replacing the affected image
- Optimize very large images
- Check whether Figma is experiencing problems
1. Check Your Internet Connection
Start with the obvious one. If Figma is having trouble loading content, check whether your internet connection is stable.
Try opening another website or Figma file. If several parts of Figma aren't loading correctly rather than one specific image, the problem may not be related to your design at all.
2. Reload the Figma File
Sometimes the simplest fix works. Reload the file and check whether the missing images appear again.
If you're using Figma in a browser, refresh the page. If you're using the desktop application, close and reopen the affected file or restart the application.
3. Check Whether the Image Layer Is Hidden
If only one image is missing, inspect its layer in the Layers panel. The image or one of its parent layers may simply be hidden.
Also check parent frames and groups. A visible image inside a hidden parent won't appear on the canvas.
4. Check the Image Fill
In Figma, images are often applied as fills to shapes rather than existing as traditional image objects.
Select the affected layer and inspect the Fill settings. Make sure the image fill still exists, is visible, and has not been disabled or replaced by another fill.
5. Check Masks, Frames and Clipping
Sometimes an image is still there — it's just being hidden by the surrounding layout.
Inspect masks, frame boundaries, cropping, and clipping settings. This is particularly useful if the image disappears after you've moved or resized elements in the design.
6. Try Replacing the Image
If the problem affects a particular asset, try replacing it with the original image file.
If the replacement works correctly, the problem may have been isolated to that image or the existing image fill rather than the entire Figma project.
7. Optimize Very Large Images
If your project contains very large raster images, it's worth asking whether you actually need the original resolution inside the design.
A large photograph may eventually be displayed in a relatively small card, banner, or interface element. Resizing and compressing these assets can make them more appropriate for the design and for eventual web use.
I built Small IMG for this workflow. It lets you compress PNG and JPG images directly inside Figma instead of repeatedly exporting them to another tool.
8. Check Whether Figma Is Having Problems
If images suddenly stop loading across multiple files, the issue may not be on your side.
Check Figma's service status and see whether other parts of the application are behaving normally. If there's an active service problem, changing your design file probably won't solve anything.
What If Images Are Missing in Only One Figma File?
If other Figma projects display images normally, focus your troubleshooting on the affected file rather than your browser or computer.
Check the affected image fills, hidden layers, masks, clipping, and parent frames first. You can also test the original image by placing it somewhere else in the file.
This helps separate a problem with a specific layer from a wider loading problem.
What If Images Are Missing Across Multiple Figma Files?
If images aren't appearing across several projects, it's less likely that all of those files developed the same design problem simultaneously.
Check your connection, reload Figma, restart the application or browser, and check Figma's service status before editing individual files.
Figma Images Not Showing FAQ
Why are my images not showing in Figma?
Check whether the image layer or its parent is hidden, whether the image fill is still enabled, and whether masks or frame clipping are hiding the asset. If multiple images are affected, also check your connection and Figma's service status.
Why did an image suddenly disappear in Figma?
Inspect the layer hierarchy first. Changes to visibility, masks, clipping, cropping, or a parent frame can make an image appear to have disappeared even when the layer is still present.
Why are Figma images not loading?
If many images or multiple files aren't loading correctly, try refreshing Figma and checking your internet connection and Figma's service status. A widespread loading problem is different from one broken image layer.
Can large images cause problems in Figma?
Very large raster assets can add unnecessary weight and complexity to a design workflow. When the original resolution isn't needed, resizing and compressing images is a sensible part of keeping project assets manageable.
Final Thoughts
When Figma isn't showing images, don't immediately assume that the image itself is lost. Start by checking whether the problem affects one layer, one file, or Figma more generally.
Reload the file, inspect image fills and layer visibility, check masks and clipping, and test the original asset. That usually gives you a much better idea of where the problem actually is before you start rebuilding parts of your design.
Working With Large Images in Figma?
Small IMG is a lightweight Figma plugin I built for compressing PNG and JPG images directly inside Figma. If your files contain oversized raster assets, you can optimize them without interrupting your design workflow.
